Lest we forget, this is the man who infamously required you to have access to the CD case in order to progress the plot in his game.
What’s the context on this? Having a hard time finding anything
Edit: looks like Metal Gear Solid, Psycho Mantis flight. I only see stuff about changing the controller port though, AI slop summary says you can win the fight by “inspecting the game case or switching ports” but doesn’t say what inspecting the case accomplishes and I don’t see anyone else mentioning it.
Contacting Meryl shortly before that fight requires getting her CODEC frequency, which is not told to you directly in-game. It’s on the gameplay screenshots on the back of the box.
Sounds like the AI slop mixed up a snippet from the MGS5 Fandom site where there’s a hint in the manual related to completing an extra operation. Has nothing to do with the OG mantis fight solution.
a particular radio frequency could only be found on the box.
Oh, you mean the same Hideo Kojima who watched Konami/Sony unceremoniously yank his work (P.T.) off consoles a few years ago with next to no notice?
Yeah, that tracks.
Oh boy. That photo of him in the criterion closet speaks volumes.
Note that if you read the actual interview his principal issue is with subscription services, not the actual physical media.
Aaaaand just another reason why I will support just about anything Hideo Kojima makes
Piracy will always be possible.
Sadly not always anymore. Publishers are esuring more and more of the game’s actual content and logic is kept serverside, even if the game is supposedly single player. Bypassing DRM on such games only gets you a lobotomised client shell and is a core argument behind the SKG initiative and general presevation efforts.
Pirates might have to get more creative, but it’s possible.
Proxies that scrape and save server-side data while you play, going through as many areas as possible, for instance.
Even if the communication between client and server is encrypted, the client can’t decrypt if it doesn’t have the key. And if the key is on your computer, it can be procured.
Reimplementing the server from scratch can certainly be necessary in a lot of cases as well, of course.
I heard the new James Bond game locks single player abilities and unlocks behind an always-online connection. You can play without it, but you can’t level up or unlock any new skills or abilities.
What the hell, why haven’t i heard anyone else talk about this, that’s ridiculous lol
