They were KDE developers first, and then either helped start the project or wandered over to it once it existed. I went the other direction entirely. I was a user. Then a user who filed bugs. Then a user who fixed them. Somewhere in there I became one of the more active contributors, and only after all of that did I become a KDE developer.
