Here is how it go:
- most expensive AI/ML engineer was layoffs.
- the spam filter was make by middle or even intern with vibe code
- Reddit want to focus on clean, non-bot, human content (to sell for AI training), so the go hard on bot
- clean data above all else, some mistake is acceptable.
- and again, maybe the intern who work on this see this model “good enough”
- leadership don’t want to spend more money to prevent incorrect catch. People are going to appeal anyway, why have to pay more ?
Reddit want to focus on clean, non-bot, human content
I’m afraid I can’t do that, Spez.

Imagine if Reddit got rid of all the bots. Traffic would collapse overnight and I’d become one giant “India wins cricket match” site.
Lmao… dude kept getting banned for ban evasion. You can’t just keep making new accords.
Exactly. I’ve been there. Though I’m surprised creating account from mobile got him perma banned. I’ve had a reddit account that’s actively evading a ban, is now few years old, and yet haven’t faced a re-ban.
I had accidentally posted to a sub I was banned from from an alt and now I cannot create a new account anymore. They catch it before I can even read a post.
Reddit’s ban hammer is a powerful one. I was only able to create an account when I got a new phone. And that too I had to use a new email address, and never ever log into my laptop with this same account, unless I’ve switched to Linux.
If you can live with the fact you have to use a different OS on your pc if you want to login, or if you are okay with waiting till you buy a new phone, then you can evade reddit ban. Then again, never log into your old accounts, especially right now when ban is fresh.
Look, honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it. Especially with the current state of reddit. I myself barely log into reddit these days. And if all you do is lurk, you can already do it.
Oh it’s not work it at all. I’ve blocked all of Reddit from my browser. It won’t even fetch links related to searches.
They won’t have me, I won’t have them.
I just did this 5 minutes ago (date/time stamp: 08-Oct-2026 10:01:30)! I blocked www.reddit.com from my firewall’s url filter.
I’m on iOS. I just use uBlacklist.
sure you can
Okay. Well…. I can’t. Even with a VPN. I think they hardware ban.
spoof hwid
not that i recommend it unless you know what you are doing
I don’t even know what that means.
I’m on iOS so I wouldn’t be able to do that anyway.
process is different but sure you would
that’s exactly what i used to do. mods power trip? new acct. that whole hydrohomies thing and the spez “editing the db” thing got me a ton of bans when i kept shitting on the mods.
i’d do it here too.
Hydrohomies?
A reddit community for making memes about drinking water. If I am remembering correctly it was banned because of the name which sparked protest from community members and caused the creation of numerous other imitation communities. This in turn resulted in cascading series of bans and other nonsense.
I thought that was it, i almost thought flandish was suggesting hydrohomies were the minions of all power tripping mods on reddit
They hardware ban now. I can’t make an account without it being insta-banned. And I have a VPN.
how do they do it? whats the tech behind that? curious. but… not revisiting that crap site lol
No idea.
reddit doesnt have ring 0 so probably not a hw ban
maybe browser based?
ai response
- Account Bans: Suspensions or permanent bans applied directly to a specific user profile (either site-wide by Reddit admins or subreddit-specific by moderators). [1]
- IP Bans: Blocking a user’s internet protocol (IP) address to stop them from browsing or posting from that network. [1, 2]
- Ban Evasion & Device Tracking: Reddit uses multiple signals—including tracking cookies, browser fingerprinting, app identifiers, and behavioral patterns—to detect when a banned user tries to spin up a fresh account. While mobile apps can read basic device telemetry, this does not function as a true low-level hardware component (motherboard/CPU/GPU) ban seen in online multiplayer video games. [1, 2, 3]
Whatever it is, they get me moments after I create an account.
Unpopular opinion: in this case, the system worked as intended for the benefit of the community. If all this person really has to contribute is a link to their own content, it’s spam.
Why isn’t his project valuable? You’re saying other people should share it rather than the author sharing it. But how are other people going to find out about it first?
Based on the votes, your opinion seems popular, but I don’t find it rational.
I’m not saying the project isn’t valuable. It could be extremely valuable. And I think it’s ideal if the author shares rather than someone else, so long as they’re a community member in good standing, with a positive contribution history. Real communities are made of people who engage, not just links, even if the links are good.
Why a ban and not a warning or content removal? Are we just getting used to the idea that we execute people as a first line of corrective action?
In this case ban makes sense to me because the account has nothing else to contribute, other than quota-meeting fluff. I never said ban everyone who breaks the rules. Again, I’m only talking about the example in the OP. But yes, warnings and content removals are also good moderation tools.

As a former mod of a large community I hated that small writers and creators bloggers were lumped in with the spammers. You want to know why Reddit became generic and boring? Why the internet doesn’t feel boundless and weird anymore? Because over time only large established websites were permitted to be linked to without getting immediately IP banned.
When /r/StarTrek was small and I was trying to grow it, I invited several Trek bloggers I liked to post their writings. These weren’t “blogspam”, they were just people who just loved writing. They would always engage with the community in the comments under their posts. Over time they all were banned and their domains were blocked from being shared by any account on Reddit.
I agree with you that the system is working “as intended” but the intent sure feels a lot like forcing anyone making OC to be platform-locked to Reddit or risk having their entire domains be labeled as “spam”.
Reddit blocks a lot of established websites, too, like websites that are pretty basic. It’s up to Reddit, but still they wonder why they’re always so shocked and flabbergasted by current events. This is why.
I’m with you on all of that
You’re describing different situation, where the system did not work for the benefit of the community. It’s not about the domain that’s linked, it’s about the genuine community engagement. Your writers were active community members so I’d want their posts too.
You and I may see it that way, but Reddit does not consider it a different situation. And by Reddit I mean not only the algorithms that determine spam, but a non-insignificant amount of users at large that consistently reported small publications as spam.
So has reddit seen any user growth that isn’t AI bots? If so it’s relying on the most like… brainwashed and uncreative people signing up.
It does seem a bit weird that you have to wait before commenting or posting. So maybe orchidfiles’ bigger problem is that reddit attaches nasty tracking tech to your device when you join
edit: also, thank you for making me aware of that blog, it seems fun. I’m reading “i live without deadlines or schedules” and, oh man, this is the way i want to be!
From a time / money standpoint, it’s costly to create an account on reddit. You have to have a certain account age and karma to even post in a lot of subreddits, which is an investment of time. Spammers replace time with money buy purchasing access to clean IPs, paying people to set up accounts and spam for karma. The only people who are going to create new reddit accounts, at this rate, are those expecting some kind of return on this time investment.
