I’d allow it, but the DC would be insanely high and they wouldn’t have proficiency since they’re trying to use an improvised martial weapon
As blumineck has shown us, you absolutely can transfer your knowledge of bows to using improvised ammunition. I’d just give it a -2 item penalty for the improvised ammo and maybe only a 20 or 30ft range increment.
