Note: Not my screenshot

It’s been over 7 years since the game was announced, and after being cancelled by Riot and bought back by the original devs, against all odds it is FINALLY playable!

The game was supposed to come out in an hour but it seems the devs released it early. I’ll wait and see some early gameplay but it looks like I might buy it on launch day. Feels surreal that the wait is finally over.

With zero user reviews of the EA, and no reviewer info out there at all.

They already talk about taking a % fee from private servers and mod sales, and they are hyper-aggressive about moderation. This is targeting the roblox crowd by the looks of it’s aggressive focus on mtx/paid experiences while sidestepping publisher fees like steam.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate steam because it inevitably will be a problem after some amount of years.

On the hytale side though, they literally aren’t on steam for the reason in a recent news article on their site:

This doesn’t mean Hytale will never be on Steam; right now, we don’t see the need for it, as we want to keep our launch closer to our community. It’s important to note that Steam currently doesn’t support some of our modding features; we will be in contact with Valve in the near future to see what’s possible.

Reading between the lines, with the emphasis i’ve added… the “modding features” they don’t support are paid mods. They want that creator club / roblox experience ASAP.

Yes, the whole reason they started on this game 11 years ago is because Mojang banned a whole bunch of MTX. Hypixel lost a lot revenue because of it (good, literally exploiting children) and went to make their own game.

Hytale will be drowned in MTX eventually.

I read about that and forgot about it. I knew riot picked these guys up for a while but that’s it.

The goal is monetization. It’s another minecraft clone… there’s so many amazing minecraft mods that don’t ask for your money and run on potato pcs (and have options that scale up to top tier gaming pcs) so I don’t know who this is really for, beyond someone just looking for shiny new toys.

Yeah, with an attitude like that I’ll sure as hell not buy outside of Steams customer protections. Too bad

Well you never know, I could be wrong. I’m just cynical after so many experiences over the years.

I used to preorder stuff. I’ve been burned so hard. I look at Lost Epoch as a comparison closest to a game like Hytale though. Early videos do look shiny so far because downloads started ~45 minutes early. They need to keep landing sales though for revenue to be worth it with a team of 50+

The skin crowd is already going nuts. (Why would you pay $50 on skins for a $20 game again? in a game with modding support and gear that changes your appearance… just why? lol - i’ve never been the spend thousands of dollars on skins guy though. Probably $20 in guild wars 2 over a decade for a couple mount skins that have no free options…)

I believe their user agreement said something about waiving the right to refund when I checked it out last night as well.

Definitely worth waiting for reviews, but I’m sure they’ll come out soon.

FWIW all mtx will be cosmetics only, with the good news that there’s no restrictions on mods changing how you look. Their EULA also disallows any pay-to-win mtx in servers similar to Minecraft.

The lead dev backtracked on paid mods (at least for now), saying he’s looking into having quick access to donating instead. I wouldn’t say it’s anything near Roblox territory.
