This isn’t going to affect Discord in any meaningful way.
The vast majority of users are going to be flagged as adults and not have to do anything.
The majority of the remainder are using Discord for “teen-friendly” purposes and won’t notice a difference.
The rest are gooners who are relatively new to Discord that will absolutely use a verification method to not lose access to the huge amount of porn that became permanently locked to the adult Discord community that they want access to.
You’re likely in groups 1 or 2. And if that’s news to you… then you need to learn to read past the headline that The Verge posted that got everyone up in arms.
Reminds me of when Tumblr decided to get rid of porn.
People talk a good game but in the end most blindly follow the path of least resistance.
The Stoat app linked in the article seems to be the path of least resistance to be honest. I hope to see people switch the way they moved from Twitter to Bluesky. Yeah, Mastodon existed, but Bluesky ended up being more normie-friendly. I believe we can draw parallels here.
I could set it up fine but a few people I tried to make a group with from Lemmy couldn’t even sign up. I couldn’t get voice chat to start :(
AFAIK the amount of people who permanently moved from twitter to bluesky is a rounding error in twitter’s userbase. I have the same expectation for discord, unfortunately.
A mass exodus takes some time. If the new place is perceived as better then adoption rates can become exponential. Getting to that critical mass of enough users for content generation and being fully featured is a hell of a hurdle though
When I saw that Discord will allow people to upload a selfie of themselves and have Discord try and analyze their age without the need to upload a government ID, I realized that nothing will change.
People will think that it is a resonable compromise, and they have so much stuff on Discord that they will just keep going.
Er… Allow or force?
You can still use Discord in teenager mode…
Also you have the option to submit your government ID instead.
So while saying “force” is too harsh, I will accept saying “coerce”…
You’re right. That’s a much better way to say than “force.”
They implemented age verification.
