  • A feature pretty close to this is built into Trails in the Sky (remake and original). You can set the default launch option to “Resume latest save”. When you do, hitting play on the game skips all startup logos and the main menu, just giving a quick loading screen then putting you right where you saved.

It won’t restore you to the middle of combat or a cutscene/conversation, but it makes resuming pretty flexible. It would be nice to see other games give attention to this functionality, or at least start to fight supporting technologies on the subject of launch logos.

  • The only note I think can lead to an outlook like this is the feeling that if someone has never made bad mistakes (eg, developing an addiction, falling in with a bad crowd) they don’t develop an interesting story. I could imagine being a woman and meeting a lukewarm balding guy who says “I’ve responsibly maintained my 401k and am ready to consider children” and just feeling uninspired.

So people at least need some vein of uniqueness to their existence.

  • Somehow, I have had the opposite experience (not with wine).

“Huh. The ketchup-infused crabcakes? That sounds interesting! I’ll get that.”
    “……You want…ketchup-infused…crabcakes?”
    “Uh…Yeah.”
“Uh…okay, do you want us to put the ketchup…like, into the crabcake?”
“…??? However it normally comes! It’s…on the menu!”

  • This is an element I appreciated of the WatchDogs games. If you escalate methods slowly, the fascist security forces do the same. So if you use baton strikes, they act the same way, and aim for an arrest that won’t kill off your unnamed character. It’s mostly a way to prefer stealth, since that stays nonlethal and silent. But in an emergency if you start shooting, they shoot back.

There’s also some bits of karma to pre-escalation on their side; 3 guards guarding an entryway is tricky to get through. 3 guards backed up by a giant machine gun turret is actually easier since it’s just a button press.

  • Team Fortress 2, Hitman: WoA (yes, I know it has a VR mode, no, it’s really not a good VR game), Helldivers 2, Doom/Quake + mappacks, Deep Rock Galactic, Battlefield… Since VR has a barrier to entry, anything multiplayer might get limited players, so if they want to focus on bot enemies and PVE, that’s fine. Any style of collectathon like Mario 64-esque or Assassin’s Creed/Far Cry would be a fun way to spend 40 hours if the game has developed a nice pattern of gameplay suitable for open worlds.

It’d also be good if $20 VR games weren’t just 5 hours long, so that we could enjoy each one for longer before having to pay for something more.
