I don’t get why they dont use AI and a person.
I Google translate as start and then fix it. I do the same with auto captions in videos. You cant rely on a machine. Its like basic knowledge its a tool and not a precise one.
This is where tech and business are fundamentally different. Us tech people are like “wow it will speed up work like translation so much! You can have it do the first run, so the overworked translators can simply be a double check and sanity, checking for nuances”
Suits though only see “let’s lay them off” with no nuance
I hate that I’m thinking this, because I know it’s a slippery slope, but if it’s just translating subtitles and not doing voice lines, that’s not all too terrible to use AI for. I know they’re starting to use AI for TV closed captioning.
Even actual human professionals have trouble guaranteeing good translations half the time, a clanker won’t even understand nuances exist let alone how to deal with them. Maybe it’ll be able to handle an extremely basic conversation better then a simple direct machine translation, but any abstract language is going to be butchered.
Exactly. Crunchyroll has apparently been using AI subs and the results are a decrease in quality
Here’s hoping this ushers in a new golden age, a time of fansubbers and pirates.
Back to 90s where I had specific groups I would torrent subs from.
