Are psychedelics really this popular, or is lemmy just full of people that like them? I had assumed they were a rather niche thing, but the sentiment towards them here today (and not just this post either) seems notably positive, though the descriptions people give sound existentially horrifying to me. Then again, I get anxious enough towards drugs that Ive not even tried alcohol let alone anything less common, so maybe I’m just the weirdo here.

Other that fooling around on lemmy my hobby is going to raves so I use MDMA/MDA/LSD once or twice per month. All my friends I meet them on parties, so using is just part of the social circle, but we do other things sober too, like picnics or board game nights. I work in corporate so is something I don’t share with my coworkers, but my wife used to work in a restaurant and was pretty normal to go to party after her shift with her coworkers and get blasted

I used to be completely sober all the way through my 30s. I tried things later and they really helped me see life from different angles. I didn’t try shrooms until I felt I was ready. They are easily one of the best things that ever happened to me. I would not suggest trying them unless you feel comfortable, are in a very familiar environment, and you have a trustworthy, caring friend to keep you company.

It definitely depends. It’s also hard to tell. My most straight-laced friends from college did acid at least once if not more, and there is a friend or two of mine that I would swear on my life experimented with drugs if I didn’t know better.

That’s something people don’t really acknowledge about drugs. The actual rate of hard abuse or like injuries/death is relatively low. It’s like driving a car, it’s one of the most common causes of death but the actual chance is so low that you don’t really think about that every time you hop in one. Similarly, a lot more people have done drugs (at least once) than you would expect. It’s just if you only take acid once there’s an overwhelming chance that it won’t have any long-term effects (except for the epiphany that there’s a wider world out there than just our every day perception lol)

Then again, it varies wildly by region so there’s a fine chance that it really isn’t as popular around you.

I think that the nature of Lemmy attracts people who are drawn to seek out new experiences and alternative lifestyles, so it’s less that psychs are widely popular and more this community has a higher percentage of users. That said, I don’t know anybody that does acid on the regular anymore, it was pretty uncommon when I was a teen, and the people who I know who like to trip (usually hippies, ravers, and punks) are typically doing shrooms. Might also be because I live in shroom country so they’re easy to find and cheap if you have to buy them. Gotta say, a few days in the middle of the backcountry with a dose it nice, I can’t imagine doing it and going to the bar on a weekend.
