Is investing the right term here, or am I going by an incorrect definition? Investment to me seems to imply a future return, which seems impossible for KDE. Is this then rather a donation?

Depends on what you want for the return, many see “returns” not just monetarily, but in making things like open source and the Linux ecosystem stronger and more secure for later down the line
