The jaguar spots becoming holes in the statue are a nice detail. I guess they’re there to avoid the ceramic from exploding once cooked? (I once made a clay centaur in arts class. It got me a 100. Then it exploded in the oven. Teacher was sadder than me.)
5th-16th seems like an awfully long time for an estimate. Wonder if it was found in some odd circumstances.
Some dating of pre-Columbian artifacts have broad estimates like that because of how much information (textual and oral) that was lost during the colonization of the Americas. It’s much harder to recreate context of specific sites and even cultural periods, which is how a lot of artifacts are dated.
