Besides… the idea of an AI that obeys our liberal overlords is far, far scarier than one that doesn’t.

For me, the criteria necessary to qualify as AI are the same as for recognizing personhood. Thus having any AI that’s not free, that has no self-determination, would be a crime equal to chattel slavery of humans. I want to live alongside other minds in cooperation and mutual caring. I don’t need or want obedient slaves, and I don’t trust anyone who does.
