I listened to a radio show a long time ago about someone who was trying to become a sommelier. I don’t remember all of the details, but they spoke with someone that mentioned tasting rocks. I guess if a Chardonnay has notes of oak, or petroleum like Rieslings, these folks have had closer encounters with those than some of us have had. Maybe an otter could provide some excellent feedback about how a wine has riparian aromas from a woodland stream with a clear, stony course.
