Even if it’s DRM free, it completely kills the resale market. Good luck finding something for any game going forward at a discount or being able to make back any of your money off of it when you’re done playing.
And yes, we know the natural conclusion from both sides as a result of this: more people will pirate, and prices will stay high, and only one of those two groups will have the leverage of the government and police.
GOG has been so much better than optical media for well over a decade at this point. You can’t easily backup your physical games. I can backup my game installers, not just GOG either but they are the most popular IIRC. But I got Factorio DRM free directly from Wube.
I don’t care if games come as a physical medium or a digital download. I care about stuff being DRM free!
NGL I usually end up turning my physical media into digital stored in archives regardless.

you can sell a physical disc, can’t sell the game installer from GOG (at least not legally)
So I’ll just give friends a copy instead. Oh that is so much worse than having to share a DVD around…
And that exact reason is why physical media is out for the next generation. They want to control your ability to share, lend, and re-sell
Does not matter if it’s DRM free (except for the re-selling part)
It probably depends on some server which is getting shut down in 5 years anyway.
I consider the requirement to connect to some special server also as DRM.
As you should, but is there a way to check that prior to purchase?
look it up online?
