I love mine. My kids have got a ton of value out of it and I enjoy it as well. I have some issues with the CEC and my sound bar just putting my tv in a loop when it sleeps, but I just turned those features off for now. Also sometimes when it resumes from sleep the performance is awful until I reboot it. Also the CEC settings don’t apply to my kids profiles and they aren’t allowed to adjust them so it’s all a bit strange. But I’m sure some of the bugs will get resolved with software updates soon enough. Its a bit worse than my desktop PC performance wise but for 30W of power usage I don’t care!
Article doesn’t say how many units they’ve sold. Sentiment in my internet bubble was very negative about price, that it was DOA. Now valve say it’s a success.
Well, if you order today, it’s not getting delivered this year.
They are selling every single one they can get in stock. Which means the demand is there.
If you could already get one shipped next day, then the sales numbers would matter.
Those people were delusional. I have no need for a Stream Machine, nor the spare funds. But I still knew it would sell just fine because the market is absolutely fucked.
It’s a success because they got all the tech YouTubers to talk about steam OS and encouraging people to build their own for cheaper or better specs. All this helps valve gain new users which is where they make most of their profit not from hardware.
Gamersnexus did a whole video on this and the valve tax is 76$. So basically nothing.
At the same time they sold every single unit they have been able to manufacture so far and have pre-sold all of the units they expect to be able to manufacture until next year, so yeah, I would call that a success.
Interesting. I declined my offer for the 2tb. That expense was just not justifiable for me. I hope these hobbyists enjoy their new machines.
I bought the 0.5tb + controller bundle. I was also sad about the pricing. But o boy, I love this machine. It is tiny! Dead silence and still a nice upgrade compared to my old desktop.
It får exceeds what I was hoping to use it for. The only thing I do not like is steam os desktop mode. My plan was to use it as a desktop pc more than a console, and I miss using gnome DE and having rolling releases.
I tried gnome again for the past 5 years. It was clean and nice but I feel like it still doesn’t handle software well. Mostly I mean the system tray. I don’t like how it wants to force you to like have everything up at once by preventing minimization. I don’t like the lack of configuration.
Everything on kid/plasma works well and there are so many nice options. Sometimes I’m just like “what if it worked this way?” And sure enough there’s settings for that.
To each their own, though.
Try Bazzite. You can get it with GNOME.
I’ve decided to use the money to build a better pc. I agree about the OS and I’ll be using bazzite.
I’m still on the waitlist. :(
