To know enough about copyright to be concerned about it using a character IP in your works but to know so little about it as to think maybe SpongeBob has entered the public domain by now is a very very narrow subsection of people.
Don’t say 1999 like that is a long time ago. Also, there’s only like 30 people that were alive when most things finally entering the public domain came out. If anyone over the age of 7 thinks that Steamboat Willie and SpongeBob are remotely comparable in age, they have no sense at all.
