Tesseract is a web client for Lemmy that was found to be secretly and arbitrarily blocking users, communities and even entire instances. You can see if you’re one of the kool kidz by running

curl -s https://tesseract.dubvee.org/tesseract/api/system/policy | base64 -d | gunzip > policy.json

and grepping your name / instance. Further details can be found in this post.

The poem above is adapted from Bertolt Brecht’s The Burning of the Books, which can be read here. If you would rather read it in the original German, go here.

I think part of it is how the malefactor broke the trust of the open source community.

Another part of course is how they refuse to acknowledge that anything they did was wrong.

Nah, inter-instance drama about who defederated from whom and who blocked what and which instance is hosting which problematic account is pretty common. If you can be sanguine about it, it’s pretty fun. This one is particularly egregious, which is why it’s getting such wide play.

Meh, I can think of at least 2-3 others just in the last six months to a year.

This event at least is real rather than made up.

I kinda don’t see why everyone has their knickers in a twist. This is exactly what the Fediverse is about - don’t like, don’t federate. And it’s one instance or one software.

This has nothing to do with that. This has to do with someone who develops a piece of software sneakily trying to enforce their own megalomania. Without making that fact sufficiently clear. And to be clear no matter what side of the political Spectrum you stand. This was unequivocally absurd the way it was done and handled once it was found out.

If you want to be in a status quo cocoon. That is your choice. But it should be your choice and not something forced on you. Quite frankly I feel that these types that want to avoid all politics aren’t very bright. Life is politics politics is life. There is no escaping it until you die. And even then people may still try to use you.

I’ve never met a single one that wasn’t an utter, drooling moron.

I’m sorry, I don’t think we’re going to end up agreeing on this. I don’t see that it’s been forced on anyone. Maybe users of that instance, or people who use the software. But the list is there.
