Going by comments in the post, the required login is coming in waves, so not all people may notice immediately.
Still, as Reddit is strong-arming its way across, maybe worth signaling to people there that the fediverse may be used without an account, so long as there’s even one instance that implements logged-out view as the protocol allows it?
I don’t have access to my account any longer, possibly VPN ban, though I never tried to recover it so I can only guess why mine is lost, else I’d post myself.
Their usage is going to drop.
I doibt by much. Look at all the people still using Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, etc.
Sadly the fact is, a majority of people don’t care enough about their privacy
Oh, I guess I lost my seldom used reddit access.
Between this, the AI moderation banning a shitton of users, and the shadow-banning (sort of) of larger subreddits will naturally push more people to the fediverse. I’ve seen a significant uptick in conversations about Lemmy in the few subreddits I still keep tabs on.
Now that it’s open knowledge that Reddit is limiting who sees left-leaning subreddits, even more people will start to look for alternatives.
I never really amused old reddit so not sure what was even the point. Why does it matter if they close it?
I doesn’t matter anymore. Most numbers I’ve seen over the past few years have pointed to old reddit being a small percentage of users. It has got to be in the single digit percentage by now
The redesigns are considered to be cumbersome to use. Practically the interface is slow, and javascript heavy. Visually, it’s considered to be ugly by old reddit users.
I think something not explicitly said often is that new reddit shifted the focus toward being more of a social media site. Profile pictures and usernames are more prominent. The social graph functions are a central focus.
There’s ton of stuff I don’t even know about. Apparently you can see who views your posts now or something? Or some kind of features like that.
There’s all sorts of chat boxes and notifications and badges and achievements. Blinky lights flashing in my face every time I accidentally end up on the new interface.
Old reddit is a plain aggregator design. There’s a simple list of posts. Each post has a comment section. That’s it.
What is that anymore but an illusion when they’ve built an entire social media site on top of that old aggregator. Most of us old reddit users have been putting blinders on. Just because we aren’t using the new interfaces with all the social networking bullshit, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
I hated it even on phone because text doesn’t fill the width of the screen so there’s a lot of waste space and having to do more scrolling to read.
Also, I don’t want to see crap like related posts and get shown recommendations.
And you see less comments when there are replies to each other which leads to have to keep clicking…more replies.
I’m using redlib with setting set to compact and wide now. Still have the same crappy more replies. But, at least the basic presentation is cleaner and texts fill the width of the screen.
