I’ve been revisiting anno 2205, infamously the ugly duckling of the Anno series of RTS games. I don’t mind so much the fact that it’s different, lacks customisation and random map generation - I’m bothered because the game is so slow to progress through on challenge settings, and it feels like a game designed just to artificially waste your time; in other anno games, you can always pull tricks to dig yourself out of economic crisis - selling off assets and surplus goods, completing quests for other parties, or taking loans. 2205 is very very confined in terms of what you can do to financially recover in the early game and forces you into a lot of military events.

    Flashback and Ultima VIII

Both games were inspired works of art with unbelievably frustrating mechanics, often involving jumping onto moving platforms. I think I actually broke a keyboard playing Flashback. And yet I kept playing.

Back then, if you had a game, you finished it, even if it made you cry. Because you didn’t have anything else.

Ultima VIII was both so cool and so annoying, I could never stick with it to get super deep into the game, but I do have a fond memory of wandering into the Tempest’s bedroom and pissing her off, then casting stone skin on myself so her lightning strikes couldn’t hurt me, and then she eventually gave up and summoned a huge horny demon who kept chasing me all over the game world until I got cornered and ran out of stone skin reagents and then it killed me. Good times.
