I was hoping for a savory flavor, I got a weird spicy flavor. I never had Indian food but I want to try it. Nevertheless, it is a good taste. For a split second I was mildly infuriated tho.
I need to find some of those. Looks tasty
Bro if you are just trying masala for the first time you are in for a real treat
Get you some paneer tikka masala. Trust me. Heavy cream/yoghurt stirred in will help with the heat.
You know what, that’s fair and I’ll upvote you. I know you’re not trying to bash the flavor or anything, you just married your expectation and it simply wasn’t what you expected, I’ve been there.
It literly has red peppers on the box.
Oversight by me.
This story is secondhand.
My brother’s first wife was Indian. As a result, he experienced many cuisines he wouldn’t have locally in the US. Apparently, she once took him to an Indian restaurant which offered a variety of spiciness levels; he, having been exposed to Indian cooking in the past, thought he could handle it. As such, he ordered the spiciest level of whatever he was eating.
The owner of the restaurant apparently came out and tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted. They prepared the food as requested and he ate it. At the end of the meal, his eyes and nose were running. Per his telling, the owner came out after he had finished it to ask how he had liked the meal. He said that he liked it but that it had topped out his spice tolerance.
According to him, the owner then responded “I thought so. That’s why I only gave you medium spice.”
Ive been experimenting with more indian vegetarian dishes as meat gets more expensive and lemme tell you even the imported spice mixes or sauce mixes at “mild” are like taking my life in my hands. Indian and indonesian people are on a whooooole other level of spice tolerance.
Glad you shared. This was delightful.
I wish you could have heard it directly from him! He’s a much more talented storyteller than I. Regardless, it’s great that you enjoyed it!
The spiciness level in some places is really insane. My wife is Indian as well, but she doesn’t tolerate very spicy food. I handle it a bit better, but some of the stuff her brother eats would just leave me crying in pain, and again a day later.
In restaurants when they ask which spiciness level we want my wife usually asks if they mean Indian spicy or if it has been adjusted to the country we’re in before making a decision.
I usually just take the minimum offered. I don’t mind a bit of spice but it’s never been the reason I enjoyed a dish.
Masala just means mix, there are hundreds of Indian spice mixes, so this name tells you nothing. For spicy you generally want garam masala, i.e. hot mix.
tbh, Indian is like Mexican and Thai food, assume there’s going to be a bit of spiciness in it.
Also don’t assume that just because you are tolerant to one (Ex: Mexican, Thai, Korean, Indian, etc) means you are tolerant to the others. You most likely are not.
People think they can handle it, then cry like babies when they’re truly tested; myself included. I can nearly drink Tapatio and Sriracha Cock Sauce, but Indian Guntur curries for example send me crying.
Sriracha Cock Sauce
I truly don’t know what that is, and I’m afraid to look it up.
Its the kind of bird on the label. I think it shows you the level of spiciness, with the cock being the most spicy one. But searching for those terms might show some masochist applying it to his cock, so yeah, just search for sriracha sauce and you will find it.
Saved me.
So true. I love spicy food and like it hot, but whenever I go someplace new I step my normal order down a level until I learn their scale.
Masala Mashallah
Never had Indian food 🤯
Some of us out here are raised in spiceless white families. I was like 16 when I had cumin for the first time, i still remember where and when I was it was so mind blowing. My mom doesnt even use black pepper :') paprika is “too spicy”
That username is so incredibly perfect in light of this, lmfao, well chosen! 👏
Hey, it just straight up doesn’t exist in the Midwest outside of major cities, and then you’ve got so many options that are similar to what youve had, but not wildly different that it’s hard to choose. I was probably close to 30 before I tried Indian food.
What do you mean? Midwest of where? Are you in America maybe?
Just buy ingredients and make some Indian food to try?
“just buy all the stuff for a woodworking shop if you’re interested in woodworking but never done it before.”
Exotic spices are too expensive to buy if you’ve never tried it, just to throw em away if you don’t like them. Then you insult people for not doing it. That’s absurd. And you know damn well the Midwest is a region in America. I’m not a fan of US exceptionalism either but we both know it exists, and that if you speak English and are on an aggregate site on the Internet you know where it is. I’ve never been to Germany or france but I know where reinland is.
Yo, south central Kansas here. Take a look for don’t buy at big box stores, next time you’re anywhere with a population of +10k look for Asian markets or Hispanic markets, if you’re extra lucky you may find middleastern or Indian grocers. You can get all the stuff you from one of those for comparable prices to most big stores. I buy everything but garlic there now because it’s cheaper and often stronger.
I personally suggest starting with the snack isle, look for the the Dragonfly brand chips and take a gamble on any of the fat cakes. After that, give yellow or massaman curry a try. It’s Thai, not Indian, but it has a similar profile. Shoot me a DM and I’ll give you a recipe and literally walk you through making it if you need.
I’m a strong supporter of the value of American culinary culture, we do actually have some amazing recipes, but we’ve all been absolutely shafted by the ubiquity of it. Everyone deserves a chance to experience the madcap world that is food.
Damn, you got aggressive real fast. Never mind then.
“Spices too expensive.” Definitely sounds like America. My condolences.
I replied initially positively, then you came back snarky a belittling, so yeah I got “aggressive” because you earned it.
You think I was belittling when I said you can just “make food”? Okay. I’m gonna say that one is on you. Feeling pretty innocent on that one. 👍👍
Snarky as well, wtf? Talk about reading too much into things and filling in your own baggage between the lines.
Peace out, bruv. Take care of yourself, okay? ✌️
Belittling was the part where you pretended you didn’t know what the Midwest was referring to.
Ew. Plain salt or Hot & Spicy. Pringles is weird with taste.
You’re not British, I take it.
No. And not fond of artifical flavors on a dried potato mush.
It’s a ok dried potato mush with salt & pepper though.
Sometimes I eat these and not realize what I am really putting in my body. These comments are making me reconsider. They definitely don’t hold a candle to Tostones plantain chips.
This is like saying ew to a spiced turd
I read that title in the voice of Cristopher Walken.
Its punctuation checks out.
I guess so. I tend to put commas where they are not needed for emphasis.
This is about related to Indian food as chocolate is to an old shoe.
So…closely related, but only if you’re in the US
Only if someone puked in the shoe.
Really off topic to the post. Masal Pringles sounds utterly disgusting, then again anything pringles is utterly disgusting.
Of all the potato chips out Pringles are the worst.
This is a pretty unhinged take. I travel the world a lot and Pringles seem to be popular in almost every country. In China I really became a fan of the shaokao bbq ones.
That said this looks delicious.
The hot ones Verde Pringles are also amazing.
You travel the world a lot and eat dogshit like pringles.
Cool Story brah…
Dude, one of the best parts of traveling is trying the snack foods from the rest of the globe and seeing how they are. Eating in general internationally is just a joy.
Can’t legally call them chips. Since they are formed potato product they have to be called ‘crisps’.
Ugg yeah and they taste like it too. They have the worst after taste.
And they are really unhealthy but if you are buying junk food you aren’t really concerned with health. I like them. They have an acquired taste.
Masala is fundamentally a blend of spices–though it doesn’t necessarily have to be “spicy” as in hot.
Garam Masala literally means “hot spices.”
Garam in garam masala is a bit more like warming hot. It’s meant to stoke the digestive fire. So it’s more the hot of ginger or black pepper. When something is hot like capsicum, you’d hear it was teekhu. Garam masala isn’t one recipe of course, but you start to see the same herbs and spices being considered.
You can easily have a garam masala that has no capsicum in it.
I found out the same thing about butter chicken. Sounds great, don’t it? Chicken cooked in butter! Yummy!
I honestly had no idea it was so spicy!
Butter Chicken typically isn’t spicey at all.
But like all dish names what butter chicken is really depends on where you are getting it.
Wait, your butter chicken was spicy?
It is usually the least spicy dish on the menu.I may just be a big wuss baby.
