Was chatting with folks in the lunch room, and it came up (from them) about how horrible Microsoft /windows is, how they have a laptop at home with win 11 but it sucks so bad they dont use it and just use their phone instead.
I of course had to say (in a conversational way, not being elitist) my life has vastly improved since I eradicated windows from my life, and Linux is rediculously easy now. They all looked at me like a master hacker and couldn’t understand how I could do anything on Linux because (their words) " you have to be a programmer to use it, its just a black screen!"
Sooo I explained how GUI desktop environments have been around since at least the late 90s, and while it operates differently under the hood, there are dozens of versions of Linux that act and look almost identical to windows. Not to mention the insane performance boost over windows. They were surprised any normal person could ever use Linux. These are smart people, they just have no idea what’s possible.
Its just crazy the amount of misunderstanding there is out there ! But hopefully I made them think a little bit more about how linux actually works, I doubt they’ll ever change but every little bit helps.
Personal choice but I wouldn’t. Apple is a walled garden that you cannot trust. Once they have you you are locked in and forced to do their bidding.
Are they better than Microsoft? A teeny bit…
And yeah, the point is to use all hardware and minimize e waste. Can’t run osx on anythibg other than Mac without significant work and at that point Linux would be better.
That said, I have a 25 year old Mac that is still useable for most things and can web browse, so they have longevity !
I use a Mac and play Nintendo games on it. Walled garden my ass.
With Mac OS, the walled garden is there, but it’s easy to get out of. No “hacking” required, just gotta know where to click. It’s just not obvious so dummies don’t fuck up their computers.
That is true! But aside from music production, I have zero reason to use a Mac instead of Linux. Not to mention the insane hardware prices and inability to repair them (which is worse than ever ).
Admittedly, I’ve been a Mac fan since I was a kid, first home PC was an Apple IIGS. The Mac mini is the way to go. You save like $1000 just by not paying for the monitor and other accessories. I use an apple monitor from 2011 that I got for $100 in 2020 and a Samsung TV for the second one. Logitech keyboard and mouse, MSI controller. I’ve always bought them second hand, usually a year behind. I’m a fan, not a glazer. ;)
However, I am trying to de-corpify my digital life, as I like to call it, so only my daily driver is still a Mac. My old mini now runs Mint as my home server and my MacBook also runs mint. (It’s an older one, any work I do other than paperwork is done on the other machine)
Naturally I started with an iPhone because they work so well together. However, once I can get my hands on one of those Motorola Graphene phones, I plan to ditch Mac OS for Linux on my daily driver. (An M4 mini that I got for $600CAD floor model right before the prices went up)
I’ll probably stick with second-hand Mac hardware (or floor models) though.
