Trump’s administration treats Portland like a whipping boy because despite being a rather milquetoast average-liberal town, we have an unearned reputation as an edgy leftist enclave merely from serving as refugee city for the region’s LGBTQ+ crowd. I don’t know if the administration is aware that outside the Willamette Valley, things get red and MAGA fast. That entire eastern region currently on fire all went to Trump in the 2024 election. They’re just letting some of their most dedicated constituency go up in flames, quite literally.

If the federal government isn’t going to help then maybe the state should keep the federal taxes

not sure why blue states have continued paying after having their actual rights trampled on, but if we’re not going to be supported by the tax dollars paid then there’s literally zero incentive to continue paying.

Pretty sure just about all tax-paying entities file federal taxes directly with the IRS, states aren’t involved in the transfer. That’s why eg income taxes have multiple filings for different levels of government. Each tax-paying entity stands alone against the IRS. An organized tax strike would probably at minimum bring out the national guard. From the perspective of the federal government a tax strike cannot under any condition be allowed to stand, it’s a serious threat to sovereignty and continuity.
