Swaths of sargassum are blanketing the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, suffocating shorelines and snuffing out marine life while spooking visitors in areas that depend heavily on tourism.

    The authors seemed to think it was having negative effects near shore too. But I suppose it might be worth researching.

    That said even if it’s true there seems to be no shortage so harvesting it shortly before it washes up seems harmless enough.
