there’s a bunch of open source (and abandoned) repos on GitHub that do this using fountain codes, fascinating stuff but not all that good, they have huge limits on the transfer rate. I recalling seeing some that use JAB codes which cram more data into each code using colours, not sure how much better they’d be than this though.
I should probably mention that a fountain code isn’t a barcode like a QR or JAB code, they’re a way to do error correction which can be applied to sequences of barcodes
