It’s what I used for an extremely long time, so i just sort of… kept using it. I’ve only recently swapped to 7-Zip. I think the only feature it has that 7-Zip doesn’t is making part files? But I could be wrong.
part files is what made WinRAR so popular with the piracy community. Especially back in the before times, when you were direct downloading and an internect hiccup would cause a download to fail/restart. Being able to download a thing in smaller parts, only having to restart smaller chunks instead of the whole, and then assembling the whole build as one… that’s what made WinRAR useful…
Compression was nice and all too, but self executing part assembly was the standout feature. Again, rendered useless when download managers are built into modern broswers. You can retry a direct download without having to restart the whole file.
Literally the only reason WinRAR had ever been used is because people either didn’t know about 7zip, or their parents dropped them on their heads causing them to “prefer WinRAR” 🤮
I’ve always used 7zip but whenever I help a friend with tech stuff and they have winrar I find that its ui is better for browsing archives without extracting it (from what I remember, I haven’t used windows 7zip for a year now and on linux I just use ark)
7zip’s UI is fine, it’s just basic and doesn’t look as nice, but why would it need to? It’s UI definitely doesn’t make it difficult to use.
7zip is not only free, but it doesn’t ask you for money at all, it just works, and it supports extracting RAR files as well. It is true that WinRAR technically USED to be better, when 7zip was still fairly new, but literally the only reason anyone still prefers it today is nostalgia.
Do people even still need to use WinRAR? I mean, the rar format isn’t even that prevalent anymore, not even for piracy stuff…
It was useful 20 years ago, but like, most OS have native support for it now, making it even further useless to download a WinRAR.

I haven’t used WinRar since I discovered 7zp hella years ago. Not only is 7zp 100% free, it’s faster and has better compression than WinRAR.
