Luanti’s Android app is currently not available on the Google Play Store due to a baseless DMCA notice filed on behalf of Microsoft by Tracer.AI, alleging that Luanti infringes Minecraft’s copyright. The Luanti app does not contain any proprietary code or assets, from Minecraft or otherwise.
We received an identical notice from the same company in 2023 and successfully appealed against it. This company also filed a similar notice this year against an indie game with similar voxel art style by the name of Allumeria.
What the hell
Repeat offense seems like something they could sue for harassment over.
I wonder if a collective effort to track who places unjustified DMCA claims and in whose name could change anything. Making working with those kinds of companies a publicity risk.
It’s not as if most people care. Nintendo’s hyper-litigiousness also hasn’t hurt their image of the wholesome games company run by people whose main goal is to give the market good games.
The truth is that by and large nobody gives a shit about fraudulent DMCA claims, not even the DMCA provision that outlaws them.
It’s rarely majorities leading to change. It’s critical mass. It just needs to be enough.
See SLAPP and “vexatious litigation.” You can in fact fuck around so hard that you’re no longer permitted to file legal claims without a third party vouching for you.
