When someone tries the sealioning trick, the correct response is always - “I think this would be more productive if you elucidate on why you feel this point needs further exploration.”
We had an academic who spent a lot of time sealioning in our department; this is how we dealt with him.
Maybe. At that point I’m usually just no longer interested in interacting. I suppose in academics it makes sense but I find any sort of competitive discussion on internet pretty pathetic. Especially when it’s about things like personally held beliefs, which is kind of a weird currency to be making bets with. And usually you’re not going to convince a random internet person to respect anything they don’t already hold by default because they are playing out a personal fantasy of some kind. “Changing my mind when presented with compelling info” isn’t really a fantasy master-debate bros really have.
Obviously there’s exceptions but most people aren’t online doing this “joust with me in front of a crowd” bit because they have the social skills to interact with strangers irl.
