Last time I tried to play Stray on Linux Mint on my laptop while connected to 4k TV, I ran into severe degradation unrelated to thermal throttling. I had to tweak the resolution down a lot and even the graphics. I recently went back to using Windows on the laptop because of an unrelated network speed unreliability problem on Mint, and when I tried Stray, there were no issues. Before this, I had even installed Stray on my gaming PC to stream from the laptop because of how laggy the performance was.

Okay so I suspected it was thermal throttling, even though I have a cooling fan. Turns out not using a cooling fan is better than using a cooling fan at the lowest setting. At the highest setting, the cooling fan is too loud but the game performs still slightly worse than on Windows.

And yeah I’ve been trying to abandon Reddit but I guess that makes me a troll. I posted a second question regarding my hard drive on reddit because the first post got too much Linux defenders. I’ll probably post the question here too, to see which community is more helpful.

There’s no karma, and since the community is so small, people will still see your post even if it’s “negative”. In fact, some people specifically search for controversial and negative posts using the sort function as they’re considered interesting. Generally we try not to delete posts, as it removes already limited content; some communities even have rules against it. Good luck with finding a solution!
It’s a mint problem. They still use really old packages and X11 for their display server.
If you tried again with a more modern OS and one specifically using Wayland, you may get better results.
Bazzite and CachyOS are built with gaming in mind.
Linux Mint being the top distro recommended by searching the internet really does not help the broader “year of the Linux desktop” goal. Like I think we are there for the right distro if you skip disk encryption and opt for home drive encryption, but that itself is not easy info to come by.

when I first switched to linux it was on a hybrid laptop also and it was with Mint. Nothing but issues. once I switched distros (cachyos) no issues.
Why? x11/wayland. X11 has issues with hybrid setups. just doesn’t work right at all. for me if I was playing a game and tabbed out of it and back it would either just show a black screen or simply show the desktop while hte game was still running. Once I switched to CachyOS (and thus a wayland DE with KDE or a wayland WM) no issues.
I mean on the PC i built in December, I learned my lesson over the 5+ years of distro hopping and I’ve been the least disappointed with fedora KDE.
Unfortunately I had my dual boot Linux setup from years ago on this laptop and just didn’t want to nuke it till now (slow internet speeds that needed 3 reboots, no drag n drop, this gaming throttling issue, hard drive filesystem corruption). And now windows 11 is working as desired so I’m just going to single boot till I need Linux desktop on an old gaming laptop.

If I understand correctly, does that mean you had two GPUs in the system? (Integrated GPU in the AMD chip + a separate NVIDIA GPU?) If so, were you maybe running on the wrong GPU? Also, did you install the NVIDIA proprietary drivers or just use the out-of-the-box open stuff? For NVIDIA usually you want the proprietary ones, and for AMD open is fine, but the kernel you’re running really matters in my experience…
You can check whether the game is running on your main GPU with “nvidia-smi”. Assuming you’re running proprietary drivers
I played Stray the other day and it was getting a bit choppy sometimes. My PC is powerful enough that it shouldn’t have any issues at all with that game. I think it’s just optimised in a way that the game doesn’t like.
I wasn’t bothered because I didn’t like the game all that much.
