What are you thinking about that?
A step in the right direction i think
Apparently I don’t have enough tattoos to use this phone
The bootloader can be unlocked, doesn’t clarify if it can be relocked. An unlocked bootloader is a security problem.
We have no information about the degoogled OS. What happens when an app needs Google Play Services? Does the OS have a Sandboxed version or microG?
The project is too short on details for me to give an informed opinion.
What apps need play services? I have been on completely degoogled phones for a couple of years, and haven’t really missed anything. What apps commonly piggyback play services nowadays?
Most apps use Firebase for push notifications, for one.
Most apps use Firebase for push notifications, for one.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that if they had a lockable bootloader or sandbox they’d be saying so.
Would be nice to be wrong though…
Minimal… $599. Um, nah, just let me degoogle my $200 Moto G and I’m good.
I very much appreciate the keyboard and the 4" size
But how many “no X, no Y, no Z” statements do you really need on your kickstarter page, holy mother of slop marketing, batman
Too bad there’s no jack port…
What is the advantage of this over just taking a phone and installing lineageos on it?
The kickstarter suggests that the phone comes all googly as default
It comes with googly as default, but they provide a custom rom without google.
The advantage is:
Its finally a phone with a keyboard.
Yeah I like having a keyboard. I miss that.
Unihertz is delivering a new one too: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jellyphone/titan-2-elite-the-5g-keyboard-phone-youve-been-waiting-for
They already existed, no idea how many of them can be flashed to lineageos though. Not sure why someone would want a physical keyboard either, no doubt there is a reason though.
I think a lot of people are put off by flashing their own phone, so providing the option to purchase this already degoogled would be nice.
I’m more interested in a non-smart phone that still has an on screen keyboard, they seem a bit rarer.
The existing ones were mostly budget models with cheap hardware and terrible software support. I miss the Nokia E71 which had a similar format, I rarely watch videos and typing on touch screen keyboards still sucks, so I would happily give up some screen real estate for a physical KB. I would love one of these, especially if it had semi-official Graphene support.
The blackberry key2, 8 years old can finally run lineage now in 2026… I am typing from this phone…
Then there waas nothing till unihertz came around and is locked.
And now we do have the clicks communicator which is more the influencer type and will be unlockable upon request and this.
But i hope you find a non smart phone… Is android go an option? A phone so slow it cant do stuff?
I had to finally let go of my Key2. Is it worth going back for lineage??
I cant test it sorry.
My key2 has a bad:
- usb port
- modem
- speaker
It just wants to go… I must let it… But only when i have a new keyboard phone
I’m happy enough with lineageos for now, I just see the possibility/probability of heading towards a non smart phone due to a fascist government… and because I am not that phone orientated anyway.
I basically use my phone as a very low power computer at home, and try to leave it at home when I go out.
Can I get it with a Dvorak keyboard?
Right now, no:
Minimal Phone 2 will now launch with five physical keyboard layouts:
- QWERTY — English
- AZERTY — Français
- QWERTZ — Deutsch
- Dubeolsik — 한국어
- Arabic — العربية
slightly off topic:
as a german and a software dev, i have to say QWERTZ sucks. Everyone should just adopt the english international layout.
