I was using a etke as a hosting service for a while but it was a bit expensive and I wanted more control. I set it up on my homelab with a VPS running a reverse proxy and like it a lot more. I believe I deployed it with someone’s Ansable playbook I found on github.
Make a matrix.org account and play around with it. I hate the Element client though.
My friends and I are in Matrix with the Sable client since march and we are really happy with it.
Can vouch for him. I can’t be happier with Matrix & Sable client.
My friends and I use Matrix with the the commet.chat client. It is the best.

You self-host or use a public instance? I’ve been curious about Matrix for a while but never found the time to set it up or find a decent instance
