    Hamas did something terrible to break the unwinnable situation Israel and its well funded allies had created.

    Not quite. Hamas decided to attack Israel, which is well within their right to do and which did help their cause. They also decided to kill a bunch of civilians along the way, which they had no right to do and which actually hurt their cause. This is something that gets misunderstood during discourse about October 7th: October 7th wasn’t just about killing a bunch of people; Hamas seems to have had clear strategic goals and they committed atrocities that didn’t help those strategic goals. What I want to say is: October 7th wasn’t a terrible but necessary act; it included both terrible acts and necessary acts and for the most part there’s little overlap between the two.
