Until last week, I was unfamiliar with Zach Snyder other than he did that long DC movie for a franchise that is infamously the more shit version of the MCU. The reason I read about him is because I watched the absolute piece of shit movie he did called Army Of The Dead and was amazed that it was made by a director that is obviously famous enough for me to have heard of him. What’s the deal? Is he known for being overrated or am I just not getting it?
He’s known for visually impressive scenes of violence stitched together with poorly written dialogue and sex.
This is a man who, in his 50s, had a Fortnite addiction so bad his wife intervened and made him take up pottery. I point this out because it illustrates how this man’s psyche is stuck in adolescence. He lost a brother to suicide when he was in middle school. This may have stunted his emotional development.
I’ve always thought he would make a good director of photography, he has some real talent for visuals. Just keep him away from the scripts and direction.
I don’t even know if you can consider him overrated as I don’t feel he’s ever made anything that I would consider moderately good.
He’s known for re-releasing/re-cutting his movies mostly. His first film, the Dawn of the Dead remake was alright, 300 was ok, and Watchmen was a fairly faithful adaptation to the comic (other than the ending). but again he just recut most of that stuff post release to resell it.
He was handed the keys to the DC Universe and fumbled that massively. He tried to make Batman vs Superman a hybrid of The Dark Knight Returns and the Death of Superman and it just didn’t work. it didn’t make sense. And when I say a hybrid of both i’m being generous. It’s a fight scene from DKR and a mish-mashed plot point from Death of Superman. It got so bad WB didn’t even let him finish Justice League.
His break out movie was a remake of Dawn Of The Dead, which is pretty good.
He then made four movie that had some not so good parts but a lot more really great parts and three of them were huge financial successes, making well over 500 million.
He then made two total turd DC movies but again both were huge financial successes. They both made well over 500 million dollars.
So yeah his movies have been utterly terrible for two long, but they put asses in seats and are massive hits. So he gets to keep making movies.
I couldn’t make 30 minutes into Army of The Dead and really I don’t know why I bothered. I guess because it was easy access on Netflix. It is the last movie of his that I even bothered to watch.

That fortnight thing is presumably around the same time as his daughter’s death so I cant fault him for finding an escape
Watchmen was surface-faithful, but didn’t understand the story at all
