Does nobody curate their FB feed or use browser plug-ins to remove the garbage? Immediately “X”-ing unwanted ads, people, or pages keeps them at bay for a good while. Plug-ins like “social media fixer” will automatically remove “recommended” and any other unwanted junk you choose via phrase or keyword.

It can be usable and useful for when you want it if you take the time to fix it. I prefer it to reddit these days specifically because I can control what shows up on my screen, unlike reddit cramming in-line ads, suggested /r/ I don’t want to see, and …well, fuck spez for wrecking what used to be a cool place. Otherwise there is no point at all in using it.

Pretty much anybody who knows how to do those things also knows better than to use Facebook. What do you even go on there for? Also this is like windows fanboy levels of cope. Like “I know this software is designed to spy on everything I do and send all that info back to the literally evil corporation that’s fucking over the planet and ruining everything, and I know that’s it’s objectively bad and terrible to use, but if you just do this list of 100 tweaks and hacks it makes it slightly less terrible!”

There are several hobby groups as well as industry groups I beong to and use it for.

        Could you be more dramatic?

Edit: if you don’t like plug-ins, why don’t you remove all your ad-blockers and anything else you use to make the internet more usable? Seeing as you’re against people using “hacks” to make things usable.

I mean, when I don’t have ad blockers I just don’t use the internet. And there’s a lot of websites that I wouldn’t ever visit again even with an adblocker. Because erasing one tiny part of something terrible doesn’t make all the other parts less terrible. Facebook isnt something that can be fixed, it’s fundamentally broken by design. It’s whole purpose(for the last 10+ years at least) is to be a data-sucking, privacy violating, brain-washing manipulation machine. It was literally rebuilt from the ground up to be as addictive, influential, and invasive as possible. It has no redeeming factors, everything that it once did kinda well can be done much better and much easier in other places that don’t have all that baggage.

Stop straddling the fence. You’re talking out both sides of your face and probably your ass, too. You can’t even obey your own rules. Either the internet is just as broken as facebook and requires tools to fix it and avoid ads, tracking, and tailored feeds, or maybe you should just go ahead and stay off the internet. Whatever, man. Go double-standard someplace else.

What ‘internet’ do you think I’m even using? I use almost entirely federated services. Like I have gotten off the internet. This isn’t the 90s anymore where it’s fun to just open up the browser and ‘browse’. Plus the internet isnt just one thing and it’s definitely not the same as Facebook. There’s lots of websites that don’t have all that tracking and tailored feeds, and I don’t use the ones that do, how is that hard to understand?

The only way to get news from my city utilities, mayor, or literally anything local is through Facebook. They do not have a website. Tons of small towns operate like this.

Why is my water brown? I’ll have to log into Facebook to find out.

They don’t have an office with phones? Like fuck that, I’m not signing my life and privacy over to that creepy pervert’s panopticon just to be able to check when the town fair is or who’s birthday it was on the town council. Or whatever goes on in small towns. I feel like there must also be a newspaper or something?
