Iranian officials have raised the possibility of launching ground incursions into neighboring countries if the United States resumes military strikes against the Islamic Republic, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with warnings conveyed by Tehran. The threats are part of a broader Iranian effort to deter Washington from launching another round of attacks after the November 3 midterm elections.
According to the report, some Iranian officials have hinted that their forces could cross into neighboring countries as part of a wider military escalation. The potential targets of such ground operations were not specified. Tehran has also privately warned Arab officials that renewed fighting could trigger attacks on Saudi oil facilities and other strategic infrastructure across the Gulf.
Iranian national security official Mohsen Rezaei warned Sunday that Tehran could strike the United Arab Emirates, which has largely avoided attacks since late spring, as well as data centers and internet cables across the region. Separately, Iranian officials have told mediators that their forces could intensify attacks on American personnel, including attempts to sink US warships in the Middle East and kill their crews, according to people familiar with the warnings cited by the Journal.
Their options:
- Armenia
- Azerbaijan
- Turkey
- Iraq
- Turkmenistan
- Afghanistan
- Pakistan
I think all of those fall into at least one of the “Trump wouldn’t care” or “capable of fighting back” categories.
Those are just the countries sharing a land border, I’m assuming Iran means across the gulf
A contested amphibious landing against the US Navy?
Sounds as implausible as someone telling me last week “cave dwelling pirates taking on the patriot system?” yet here we are
Pakistan and Turkey are bears I doubt Iran would be willing to poke
Pakistan is an “unwilling” enemy of Iran, which is the reason they aren’t taking offensive roles even in the mecca pact. Probably the largest/ second largest source of dollars for Iran, and even when they had a minor “war” with Iran last year they really don’t want to fight them.
Pakistan has nukes. No one will touch them.
Where is Kuwait?
I suppose they could - they’d have to go across 10 miles of Iraq (realistically more, unless they want to build some rather long pontoon bridges) and I can see Iraq sitting that out.
Logically they will attack the UAE across the Gulf. The UAE expects US protection.
