I’ve done useful things with LLMs, some of which I probably wouldn’t have done without it. I’m sure things would be different if frontier models’ token weren’t subsidized by investors, but I’ve been running local models as well and they aren’t useless.

What scares me is people blindly using these tools without hesitation, completely outsourcing their thinking to them. I work industrial process automation and that approach scares me a lot, in my field code is generally not complex, but you have to understand how the system responds to every action, that’s difficult for humans, I can’t imagine a text model doing great at that.

And I’m disgusted at colleagues just copy pasting our IP into random cloud-based LLMs, makes me want to bang my head on the wall.

AI Art is even more stupid, getting a diffusion model to depict something generic close to what you want is easy, but when you want more precise control it takes a ton of effort, and it’s a whole new area of knowledge. Sure, full models on servers with terabytes of RAM will follow instructions better than what I run on my GPU, but it’s still absurd.
