They wouldn’t know if you asked them, or rather, they would just tell you another lie. The truth is that there is very little to no ethnic difference between Ukrainians and Russians. The differences are cultural.
Barely any cultural difference, too. That border used to be Schengen before Schengen. I could walk across drunk without ID and the guards would just wave.
