What do you mean? Taiwan is independent for all intents and purposes, but is not, nor if I’m not mistaken does it claim to be, formally an independent country. I acknowledge that reality, yes.

So is Taiwan part of China or is it not? Because if they haven’t renounced their claims, then they’re still maintaining that they’re part of China, are they not?

When was it that they formally declared independence btw? What date should I celebrate Taiwanese Independence Day?

You don’t need to declare independence to be independent. Only if you were dependent in the first place you claim independence.

ROC was never dependent on PRC. They just both claim the same territory. They are 2 independent countries that claim the same territory, just like both Israel and Palestine are 2 independent countries that claim the same territory.

Regardless, I agree with the traditional US stance of “strategic ambiguity” which does not formally recognize Taiwan as independent but treats it as being independent de facto. This stance has maintained peace for many decades with Taiwan being functionally independent, so I can see no reason why any reasonable person would want to deviate from that. So I will repeat my position that I consider Taiwan de facto independent, but not formally so.

The nuances of Taiwan’s geopolitical position have absolutely nothing to do with the racism in the meme that I’m criticizing.
