For anyone selling online who doesn’t have a photographer or Photoshop: this is the checklist I use to get clean white-background product photos, which most marketplaces either require or reward.
Before you shoot
- Contrast with the background. A dark bag on a light wall separates cleanly; a white mug on a white tablecloth doesn’t. Background removal, by hand or with AI, struggles most when the edge colours match.
- Even, soft light. Window light from the side plus a sheet of white card on the other side is enough. Avoid hard shadows that touch the product’s edge.
- Shoot bigger than you need. More pixels give more edge detail. You can always downscale later.
- Fill the frame but leave a little space around the product so nothing gets clipped.
After you shoot
- Remove the background, then check the edges at 100% zoom. Hair, lace, glass and thin straps are where cutouts fail.
- Add a soft shadow under the product. A pure cutout on white can look like it’s floating; a subtle shadow looks like a real studio shot.
- Keep one canvas size and margin for the whole catalogue. Consistent framing makes a store look far more professional than any single perfect photo.
- Export JPG for white backgrounds and PNG when you need transparency (for example, for banners or ads).

What do other sellers here use for product photos? I’m especially interested in setups for reflective items.
