Hello Everyone! These last months I’ve been working on a clean-room FOSS implementation of the CLZ software suite. For those unfamiliar with them, they offer collectionists applications for users, particullary aimed at physical media (comics, movies, tv shows, books, music). I hated when they made the switch to the SaaS model because they separated web and mobile apps and each has a separate subscription fee, for each one of their apps. I decided to start a free alternative to it, almost 1:1: https://github.com/collectarr/collectarr-app
The architecture of the service is centralized and can be soft hosted. The app stores everything locally on the users device, the sync service is supposed to be hosted by the user and allows syncing between devices and the core one stores only item metadata (no personal data that users stores on their entries). That metadata is manually curated and will be expanded by the community with proposals and will be hosted on my server when I’ll have the basic schema for most collection kinds going on. In the near future I’ll also make a sync bridge between Collectarr and Floppy so each physical release watching/reading status can be synced with floppy media entries.
AND YES I’VE USED AND I WILL CONTINUE TO USE AI FOR IT, IT’S A GREAT TOOL. All testing is done personally by me, my main motivation is to have a clz free alternative that I personally use. I would love if you could try this (the desktop app is the most stable currently and I recommend you trying it). I accept any ideas, issues and PR proposals. For an indepth guide there’s also the page that I hosted on github: https://collectarr.github.io/collectarr-page/ But keep in mind docs and the manual keep changing very fast these days because of the nature of the applications, and it takes a while to update all of them, I’m the only contributor so far.
Thanks for your work.
It really feels like the end of software projects, proprietary or open, since anyone can recreate basically any software alone, in a short amount of time. I think this marks the end of the licensed proprietary software business model.
Thank you! I’m 100% sure it’s the end of proprietary software. Give it about one year and we’ll see FOSS alternatives for anything on the market. I just hope they don’t change how laws/trademarks/patents work just to battle this. I’m going to release also comics functionality in the app today, and I’m trying to host the core metadata server also today. I’m hoping in about a month it will be 100% feature parity with CLZ and working without any bugs.
You know, I was convinced AI software would never be able to build big complex software projects because of its rather sloppy coding style, but times have clearly changed.
I also worry if the situation turns clone hostile. Just this week, there was an article of somebody reverse engineering their samsung tv using AI(claude I think?), and then they got banned from it! And also this week, Anthropic added a new rule to their harness that disallowed replicating existing games. If this continues, we dont need lawmakers to make this sort of endevour next to impossible. So I suppose: Build it, while they let you!
Yes, exactly build it while they let you. People should understand this and instead of bullying ai users they should join them while they can. It’s for their own good st the end of the day to move from paid services to self hosted ones
They have changed indeed. I still find laughable that people think otherwise given all the practical examples. They downright underestimate llms. Given enough data they can do anything. And yes I hate ai censoring completely and all harnesses and stuff. They should just let it go wild, if it can destroy everything human built in hundreds of years then it’s debatable that what we built is even actually good. It can find more security flaws than any human on this planet combined.
This is most likely going to be downvoted into the ground, and if you’re new here, you might be confused as to why, so let me help you:
-
Nobody likes accounts created specifically for the purpose of self-promotion. I don’t know why people still insist on doing this. It’s basically an advertisement, even if it’s an advertisement for a free product - nobody wants to see advertisements. Your whole account (as of this time) is a walking advertisement. At least you didn’t name it CollectarrDev or something stupid like that, so you’ve got that going for you, which is nice.
-
You’re pro-AI, which is just a generally unpopular stance around here to put it lightly.
If you aren’t new here, then shame on you, you should know better, and you’re getting what you deserve. Post on your main account, you coward.
To be honest I expected different kind of people here compared to reddit, but it seems trolls are everywhere these days. Disliking everything based on assumptions.
The advertisement is mostly because I want to break CLZs monopoly on that, not because I care for any donations or money returns. Just as that team wants to do the same for Adobe products.
TBH i don’t think most of the criticism you’re getting is based on assumptions or trolling. Did you even read the README and other documentation? There’s a lot of placeholder content and it shows that very little effort was actually made. You say you used AI as a tool, but from the commits, it looks like AI did all the work and there wasn’t even much supervision or review of work being done.
How do you expect others to be able to contribute and form a community to support this project? What plans do you have if you can not afford the AI credits to continue developing this project. What do you expect people to do if you must abandon this project?
There’s a lot of placeholder content and it shows that very little effort was actually made
No this shows that the project evolves fast and there’s no point in updating the readme every day at each change; I’m getting close to a final release soon and I’ll update the readme accordingly. Again, I’m the only contributor, there’s so much I can do. If you got any questions I’m more than open to answer them; at the end of the day the readme is useless for people anymore, agents can just set you up in seconds with any kind of FOSS project. It’s just a matter of getting you entitled head out of your ass.
It was supervised; I’m testing all of these changes by hand. Yes there are still a lot of placeholders, I’m still just a man at the end of the day and I’m guiding the AI, not making him do the project however he wants. “What do you expect people to do if you must abandon this project?” Well this can apply to any other project as well, AI or not. Teey can just look at my commit history for other projects and my github activity; it’s not that hard.
You say that, and then you shamelessly self-promote and dump a cuck-coded repo on us and sing its praises. You have done zero contribution to our community to establish your technical aptitude, let alone make a positive difference to the community itself.
The fact that you are baffled by this reception is honestly hilarious. Pull your sanctimonious head out of your ass.
Okay Bro I’ll let you clean my ass. Blocked.
Yes i’m new here; I made the account after I got tired of reddit, not necessarily for self advertisement, but at the end of the day these communities I’ve posted to are exactly for this so I don’t see a problem with it.
And yeah, I know pro AI is an unpopular stance, not everyone is a developer. I’ve never seen a developer anti AI, even Linus Torvalds is pro AI now. Those anti AI dudes just don’t value their time and don’t know how to use it efficient. They just hate the influx of slop, which is just a momentary thing, it will soon balance itself. But the problem was never AI, it was social media. So disliking AI for this, is the same as disliking Internet.
Anyways, thanks for the response mate. Don’t worry about me, I’m used to getting hated for unpopular beliefs.
but at the end of the day these communities I’ve posted to are exactly for this so I don’t see a problem with it
If you were a user with some post history to establish yourself here, who had participated in these communities previously, either as a poster or a commenter, had gotten to know the demographic that resides here, and who had then posted about your own project, you’d have gotten a very different reception (well, maybe not, because of the AI opinions, but you at least wouldn’t have gotten shit on for the self-promotion). That’s not what you did. You created an account and immediately came to advertise your vibe-coded app. It might be a quality product, but nobody here knows you, you have no history, and you’re shilling slop, so that’s what we’re assuming it is. Nobody’s going to touch it.
Also, if you do want to participate here long-term, maybe research the instance you’re signing up on and make sure you agree with what they promote, because the instance you choose immediately creates a preconceived perception of you.
" might be a quality product, but nobody here knows you, you have no history, and you’re shilling slop, so that’s what we’re assuming it is. Nobody’s going to touch it."
Isn’t internet just for that, to find new people? Making “a history”. Bro you’re praising communities like they are your life dude. Who the fuck has the time to check account histories. You may have OCD on this I don’t know about you, freaking purist. Blocked.
And nothing of value was lost.
