For some reason despite not owning one I have alot of interaction with Canal Boaters.
They are always interested in information about places and services along canals and I was trying to think of the best way of explaining how the contribute and use Openstreetmap
Of course contributing is easy - I just recommend mapcomplete.org, everydoor app, and street complete (less so as its road related)
And then I recommend an App like OSMAnd to use Openstreetmap - But for Canal Boaters specifically - Is there any way they could use layers or searches, any tips, tricks or Apps specifically get information that would be useful for them or be useful if in a canal boat?
Osmand has a ship profile, maybe you have to enable it in settings. It plans routes on water, displays nautical signs on the map, etc.
There is also a Nautical Map View plugin, available only in the paid and foss osmand versions: https://osmand.net/docs/user/plugins/nautical-charts/
@abeorch @openstreetmap
I don’t know if it’s any good but in theory I think OsmAnd can route over canals in its ‘Nautical’ theme.It supposedly shows
amenity=sanitary\_dump\_station
so if a pump out has that tag it could be handy for some users. but at the moment all it’s doing for me is crash.The campersite theme on mapcomplete shows sanitary dump stations as well
@pietervdvn yeah I was just trying to create one for the equivalent waterways tags, but I’m finding the studio really confusing.
Would you mind on elaborating how you would expect it to work?
@InsertUser
Cool yeah. I will try that. So the #theme determines what items get shown in #Osmand ?
@abeorch@lemmy.ml @openstreetmap@abeorch@fosstodon.org @abeorch@lemmy.ml @openstreetmap to an extent. E.g. the seamark variant of that feature is meant to render in that view.
Annoying the closest one I can find tagged as for land doesn’t seem to be showing up on my phone. This is a bit confusing as it’s listed in taginfo as being used for creating maps.
@abeorch@fosstodon.org @abeorch@lemmy.ml @openstreetmap
OK, so it looks like the nautical view only shows the seamark tagging for that feature and the land based tagging only shows if you search for it. The waterway tagging appears not to be in use. I might put a request on the issue tracker for this.
Images attached but will probably only show in Mastodon.

If you have a lot of interactions with canal boaters, it might be interesting to create one or more custom layers in mapcomplete. Give MapComplete Studio a shot (but keep in mind that it is not exactly user friendly, let me know where you get stuck and I’ll try to fix it).
If you have created one or a few layers you like, let me know and I might include them in the production version of MapComplete.

My first attempt with some guesswork as to what would be useful: fuel, water points, black water disposal, toilets, showers and other drinking water.Wow, very good first attempt! I’m reviewing the layers you made (esp. fuel station and sanitary dump station) and they seem very well done!
I’ve spotted a few small mistakes, but nothing fundamental.
It would IMHO be even more interesting to have a layer about the canals themselfs, to indicate what types of boats (e.g. small boats, kayaks, …) are legally allowed to and physically possible to go over a certain waterway; that would be great!
@pietervdvn @openstreetmap Thanks.
I did think that a background map that emphasised water would be good, I didn’t think of trying to get MapComplete to pick out the navigable ways.
Marinas, chandlers and boatyards would probably be good things to have. A (read only?) lock layer for context maybe.
I think mooring areas would be good, but it seems these are normally done on lengths of way, but MapComplete would be limited to adding points (AFAIK).
Ah so I started with this and got stuck. I was struggling adding existing layers which already had relevant features.
Maybe we could chat and see if I can have another go.
@abeorch @pietervdvn @openstreetmap
I had a go but haven’t finished it. The link should be kicking around in this thread somewhere.
The major thing I thought would be good but haven’t included yet is chandlers because the tagging for that is a bit confused.
Also boatyards I guess.
