I own 2 bloated proprietary devices and don’t use them for anything important, like banking or dealing with authorities. I also don’t trust the manufactures not selling my data.
Id like to have a working device with no bloatware and completely degoogled. Ironically I’d have to buy something made by google to run GrapheneOS on it. Intended use would be to use as a camera, to run CoMaps on it, pkpass files with foss-wallet, reading epubs, making phone calls and running one aurora app.
I don’t need the device to play games, watch movies, show off or to play loud music, but I’d like a jack port for my headphones (I assume google headphones would cease to work if I degoogle the device, nor would I want to spend more than necessary enriching that data grabber even more.
Is there a pixel device with a jack port?
Are batteries inside pixel devices glued to the frame or can they be easy to change?
My main OS is debian. How easy is to transfer data from GrapheneOS to debian and the other way round?
Overall if you run GrapheneOS on a pixel, how many years running it and what do you think about it?
Do note, RCS can be a bit of a bitch (might have to disconnect your old phone from your number, read the RCS forum thread if you have issues), some banking apps don’t work (really just depends), and you can no longer use Google Wallet/Tap-to-pay (but maybe that’s a privacy positive). These are the only major issues that might hold you back.
Otherwise, use GOS installer on their website (use a Chromium browser! FF breaks it) for the easiest ROM of your life.
Did not even know what RCS is. I would bother the least with this “service”.
And I am aware of the banking apps, this is one reason why I don’t use their “apps”. Internet banking in web browser is the way.
And my country is so aloof from the civilisation that wallet/tap whatever are not even allowed. Blissfully ignorant.
Cool I’m not needing the others 👍
But RCS is a standard and recommended to use, for both QoL, but also security. SMS is less secure and means chats with family aren’t E2EE. So unless you use some sort of other communication method like the Signal app, WhatsApp (w/ E2EE enabled), Threema, Matrix, etc. your chats aren’t secure. Privacy is a whole separate question, and depends on your provider (i.e. Whatsapp is owned by Meta, which is the worst company for privacy.)
Please use RCS, or some form of E2EE
I think nobody here uses RCS. SMS is also old fashioned. I rarely text others to be honest. I ask others to come to signal but people are intoxicated with meta family. And Viber. I think Viber has e2ee enabled by default. Not sure for same if they upload the chat to g drive…
