There is a quote attributed to Voltaire that says :

Common sense is not so common.

For me, it is common sense that arrest quotas are a terrible idea, because one of my great-grandfather was sent to a gulag due to that. For business types, it’s just “efficiency”.

who knew that knowing you should clean the filter on your dryer made you racist.

I guess I’m a Nazi because I know you should clean the filters on your dishwasher, clothes washer, and HVAC every three months.

🤔 something about this sentiment doesn’t add up now that I’m thinking about it.

I think the word they forgot is prejudice, not “common sense”.

Yeah I’m a little confused by this. It’s probably an american thing.
If >50% of your voters pick a racist party, racism must be “common sense” over there.

The point is “common sense” is the justification people gove when they don’t have reasons for their beliefs.

I assume and hope you could give 1 good reason for each of those things you do.

I don’t remember where I originally heard it, but I like the sentiment that the problem with common sense is that it’s common but not necessarily good.

It’s not the average person’s stupidity you need to worry about.

It’s the exceptionally stupid that give average idiots a bad rap. We’re all average idiots every once in a while. The exceptionally stupid are the reason they put warning labels on chainsaws. The exceptionally stupid will ruin your entire day without ever interacting with you.

The average idiot might miss his exit, even shoot across a lane at the last second to make it. The exceptionally stupid will careen across 4 lanes of traffic at the last second and cause a 3 car pile up behind him, realize it was the wrong exit anyway and get back on the interstate going the wrong direction.

We are lucky when the wake of destruction following the exceptionally stupid catches up to them, if only because it slows them down long enough for us all to move on.

Broooo they did this to me so hard they literally copied the plot of Killers of Flower Moon complete with the native genocide and deliberate fraud. They did this year. They’re still up to it hundeds of year later their bars are all made up even when they say explicitly not to repeat historical disparities of unequal protection they don’t care if the racism is accomplished. The losing presidential candidate too. Sometimes things work out.

I try hard to avoid “common sense”. It’s a way of saying, “If you don’t agree, you’re not sensible.” Also, it’s intentionally vague.

“We need common sense gun laws!”

    “Like what exactly”

    “…”

I know this is just thebad.website comic, but I’m genuinely curious (and an idiot) to know what the connection is with generally racist-inclined folk love for saying that everything is common sense. What makes them think in this way?

It’s the backbone of their every argument–no matter what it is, if I ask, “Why do you think x, y, or z is the case?”
It is without a doubt their instant reply, ‘It’s just commonsense!’

They should really add racism to the list of examples, because blaming every problem in the world on that is also a thought-terminating cliché.

Why are black people poorer on average than white ones? — Racism

Okay, why are there more black athletes in many professional sports like basketball or football? Also racism? — No, it’s because they have a higher likelihood of having natural talent for these sports.

See how that works? As soon as you’ve pinned the problem on racism, you’re done investigating. Just like with common sense.

Before you even bother trying to correct this person, keep in mind that they are also so unbelievably stupid that they think ICE is arresting criminals.

I’m just going to address your comment about Black people and sports.

Black people do not have a higher natural talent in sports, for Black youth sports is one of the only ways to achieve success, so they place a higher emphasis on sports. It’s evident because they are only dominant in the sports they have access to.

Pointing out that you harbor racist sentiments is not thought terminating, it’s apparent in your writing.

Okay, so you’re saying racism actually IS the only reason black people are overrepresented in those sports, have I got that right?

Shouldn’t we then maybe implement a diversity quota system in order to give more white and Asian players a chance to compete? Seems kinda unfair to exclude them, don’t you think? Perhaps if more of them had a chance become highly paid sports stars, they’d be less overrepresented in engineering or finance.

Because there isn’t a real reason besides idiocy and hate, if they try to rationalize it, it falls apart, they have to face or give away that they’re just hateful idiots. Saying it’s “common sense” is an easy scapegoat to tidy up the truth, even if it’s just for the benefit of their cognitive dissonance.
