The later half of the 20th century US that idiots in this country wax lyrical about was entirely dependent upon the influx of immigrants that increased the US population steadily throughout the 20th century.
I unfortunately see Europe getting ready to make the same mistake with shutting out immigrants while simultaneously panicking about aging populations and the austerity it will bring.
Most of the Europe right is screaming about refugees, which form a tiny fraction of all immigrants. They’re totally with the rest.
Of course, “asylum seeker” is really just a dogwhistle for “brown person”.
Say you’re a young woman with a stable male partner. What would it take to convince you to have a baby?
At this point, I’m thinking: A guaranteed income that’s enough to pay for all the expenses a child requires, including housing. For twenty years.
