So the head of a church (priest/preacher/pastor, whomever calls them self father) calls in asking why he’s getting charged taxes on apps in his app store. Says he bought two new iPhone 17 pro max’s tax free (one for his wife one for him) and his computers should be tax free because “they are for the church”. Your apps aren’t for the church. Your phone is not for the church, God didn’t demand you answer a phone or download an app… get back to your damn church and pay your sales taxes person who points his phone at a Donald Trump tie and thinks you are the person who isn’t the mooch

Churches need to lose the blanket tax exempt status. If they want to be tax exempt they should file as a non-profit like all the other tax exempt non-profits. Of course they would never do that because it would mean actually functioning as a non-profit.

I will agree religion is for those who need something to believe in. It’s nothing to be ashamed of nor need help or ask for it especially in the society that has been built for us. So I would say. Religion is something that prays on those in need, but we do not provide for as a society.

If someone believes in what Jesus was, they would simply state helping everyone is right.

Jesus doesn’t believe in borders or crimes, if you do… You aren’t a Christian

most churches operate as or atleast should operate on a non profit basis, I think that if priest’s phone was “work” phone (owned by the church) it would make sense, but you can imagine how much personal stuff the “work” phome would be used for

Not just owned by, but used by and for the organization. The fact that his wife has one too makes that very suspicious.

Tax exempt status for religions applies to federal income tax. Sales tax is per state and state taxes vary between states.

I’m not a tax account or attorney, but maybe if they keep the receipts they can file there taxes and report it and maybe get the money back.

Since taxes are filed every year is this the first year they’ve been a pastor or whatever and doesn’t know? If it is their first year and they’re complaining about taxes on apps and phones or whatever, then it sounds like theyre kind of trashy to be honest.

Unless it’s a very small church it should have a finance admin to manage all business/church expenses. Just need to get the receipts and they can reimburse you from church funds. i have even submitted screen shots.

I would imagine the overhead for maintaining non profit or tax exempt status takes more than one form in April. So it should be deligated out.

Trashy is an understatement. They have a phone and a phone plan and they want even more.

Why did they call specifically you? Are you a tax office?

The whole tax exemption is stupid, but he has a point. If a stupid law is not enforced equally, they should be enraged.

To keep out specifics, think calling App Store or Play Store and complaining you paid tax when you bought an in app purchase while playing roblox.

Also I agree, taxation on a digital product is bloody stupid. And I probably was not allowed to say, but told him that sounds like the argument like “right to repair” when he asked why you would be charged if you down “own” the product. Oops. Either way, it’s what they asked

Why is it stupid on dogital products. The point of VAT is that you pay a tax whenever you buy anything: if you buy more thing you pay more to the common purse. Or I’m just too European and got used to paying tax on literally everything.

Some people apparently think faeries give them clean water and fix roads. Maybe that guy just likes driving a bus, and being asked to help pay for the society they live in and benefit from is beneath them.

Capital gains taxes and property taxes pay for those things. Regressive taxes like sales tax are a drop in the bucket and exist to punish the poor.
