Were they? They seemed to attract them more than repel them. Quickest way to turn 1 religious zealot into 20 was add one obnoxious internet atheist.

Do the buzzer things that kill flies attract more flies because there are a lot of fly corpses around it?

Only until Dawkins and others like Thunderfoot convinced them that Islam is a thousands times worse that the worst of christianity, then also the culture wars happened.

Even geek circles wanted to do the same “big tent” bullshit new atheists tried to pull when atheism+ happened, except it included actual christian fundamentalists. This lead to some new atheists welcoming them, due to the very heavy overlap of the two circles, which in turn even lead to them converting to conservative christianity.

        atheism+

So all in all they took modern satanism, gave it another label and managed to lure fundamentalists into this? Color me impressed.

Atheism+ was atheism with progressive politics, but suddenly some people thought Islam was worse than christianity, and also thought it would court conservative christians a lot better if they were more friendly to conservatism, and also also communism bad therefore we need to counterbalance that with showing that you can be both an atheist and right wing. So atheism+ fell apart, then the secularism of new atheism fell out of favor for “defending western civilization from islamism”, as far-right christians were better at big tentism.

Well, just joking ofc. So that islamophobia was also part of atheism+? The religions wiki conveniently leaves that part out. It really reads like the similar values which the church of Satan stands for, just without the whole “We worship Satan to fuck with fundamentalists” schtick.

Atheism+ was neutral towards Islam, which -alongside with all the progressive politics - broke the minds of more islamophobic new atheists.

That level of conviction that you’re right about something can be pretty destructive regardless of specific belief system. Theory of evolution was a great step forward but also somehow resulted in phrenology and branches of capitalism that liken it to “survival of the fittest” so. People like to concentrate power amongst themselves and people like them then justify it as them being smarter and more right about some kind of fundamental truth about the universe. Assholes gonna asshole regardless.
