Compression algorithms have come a long way in the last 25 years. Comparing a 96kbps MP3 from LimeWire in 2000 to a modern 96kbps opus file will be night and day different.
96kbps opus today is extremely listenable, even on good speakers (granted I don’t have a million dollar setup, but I have studio monitors.)
