I am once again called to praise orgzly.

The idea is simple, it keeps all your info in plain text files on device. It allows tags for whatever you need, recipes, articles, books to read, whatever you like.

Keeping it in sync with a PC is possible in several ways, I use syncthing.

It is for sure not the easiest solution, but it’s all open source, all plain text and gets the work done.

P.S. on PC I use logseq to edit my org files, but there are other options.

P.S.2 I read the question again and I had missed the part with the e-reader. I doubt my approach will help there, but I will leave the comment in case it is helpful to someone.

In all honesty this may be a bit advanced depending on your experience and more importantly nerves, but any old PC/laptop can be turned into a server.

As for parameters I would suggest you go to the apps you plan on running and check their minimum requirements.

If you are in a country where left ideologies are not exactly popular, a low risk option is also joining a union or forming one in work. Here is a link to a post with some unions listed but google search will also work.

Overall agree, but I would like to add that radical parties and violent action IMO will not solve any problem alone, there is also please for peaceful protests, for writing manifestos, for writing license agreements and of course for writing open source code.

I don’t want to discourage you, so go for it, it may be fun and you may learn some things or at least think on difficult topics like:

How do you measure human suffering?

How do you deal with extremists that truly believe their cause?

And maybe most interesting what if the radicals are not wrong? (Talking about topics like climate change or overthrowing oppressive regimes)

If this can give you hope I cope by knowing that open source at least sometimes levels the field for the disadvantaged. Like the situation with Deepseek and openAI

A year later I have some insights into my own question.

One major reason our current system requires constant growth is debt.

Debt is usually issued with interest meaning you have to return more money that you took. This requires you to create more money or grow in some way.

That is true for Linux and maybe Mac, but on windows I think they have a bit more overhead. But again I agree that in most cases it is not significant.

Can’t you run if from a container? I guess the will slow it down, but it will deny access to your files.
