Pretty much. They already had this tendency, it is just accelerating and now the technology has kicked it into turbo.

I do genuinely think that short from content has done far more damage to society than even the more pessimistic people give it. It is the final form of ‘The medium is the message’, the medium is saying that everything should be brief and surface level at best.

Don’t get me wrong there is a skill to brevity, especially in writing. Some books could be a fifth the length and they would only benefit form that. But short form video ain’t it this. Peoples attention spans are simply gone, I do not know if they can ever be brought back.

In the Confucian philosophy of Li, it is loosely translated to ‘right’ or ‘equity’. It is considered that those that enforce laws but are willing to bend them based on what seems right on ethical and virtuous means, those are people that have good Li. To know that while the laws are written in ink and stone, they do not have to be enforced in the same manner.

Don’t forget ethics. Legal is codified authority, moral is a social construct as defined by doctrine, ethics is what one holds dear internally beyond those two. Thus ethics differs between all people.

I argue that we should abolish copyright. However to be a bit more pragmatic, if we were to keep copyright, it should be for 10 years from publication. You can apply to have it extended another 10 years but with a fee attached to approve it per work. This means people can still have some control of the work for a decade after completion and if it is still worth while, they can get another decade. But after that, it is public domain.

“It’s legal” is a great example of ‘Thought-stoppers’. Little phrases that people use so that they do not have to do the mental work of thinking of the larger systemic issue. “They will think of something” is a great one when it comes to climate blow back and technological issues.

But all thought stoppers are like ignorance, ignorance is bliss but the consequences are dyer. So when people tend to go to reductionist thinking on complex issues, you tend to get a form of conformity that can be manipulated. Not consistently but enough to cause large power structures. Alas, for every complex issue there is a solution that is simple, easy and wrong.

Turns out reducing peoples expose to their core advertisement business while burning millions of tokens to produce a summary, not the best business decision they have ever made. But what do you expect of MBA’s that praise Jack Welch like a God.

To be fair, Reddit has been Zombie Reddit for about 5 years now.

When they received $150 million from Tencent in 2018, the writing was on the wall. You cannot accept that kind of money and keep to the original aspiration. The IPO just accelerated it.

The amount of slop on there nowadays is wild! Even the smallest communities are being overrun with it and they don’t give a damn because it is good for business short term.

It is gambling attached to a ponzi scheme. It kind of works so long as growth can keep up, but if it ever stops and reverses for any reason…

The way stocks are meant to work, it isn’t gambling. It is an investment in a company in order to help them grow and gain a return from that.

The way people use it now, it is gambling.

Best argument for no public trading of most companies.

In the time Steam has been a thing, Microsoft has been three or four different revisions of how their game system works. I still have titles that try to use Windows Live logins.

Microsoft is brilliant at formulating decent ideas, fumbling it, then struggling to hold it together before they reformulate and start from ground one yet again. They keep hitting the reset and ruining nay decent moment they gain.

Generally you can tell when a company will end up on the downward spiral towards the customer and that is about 4 seconds after they IPO.

We are for the jobs the comet will bring.

I am starting to think that having hard technical or imposed market limits might be a good thing, or at least the lesser of two evils.

It you had to build a game on before the era of cheap middleware engines, there was a natural barrier to entry. The Nintendo seal of approval used to mean something at least even if the game was still trash.

But now, you can flood the space with minimal barrier to entry and we are being flooded with junk. But those that control the access and making big money off this so they turn a blind eye.

A few months back, there was a reddit post for my local town, it was about self publishing their new game on Steam. Anyway, about a dozen others posted links to their projects all releasing within the next few months, all of them copies or low effort projects. This is a single town, in a single country, that is releasing potentially dozens, possible hundreds of games a year. The market is flooded because we have made it so easy to pump this junk out and there is little interest in putting even vague restrictions on it.

The crash is coming and we will all know why it happened.

Pretty much this. I am reminded of when reality TV first came up, it was thought that it would be a passing fad lasting maybe a year or two. People get exited by it at first, then get bored of it craving something with more substance. It never happened. Turns out the slop machine hit a level good enough that many would lap it up. Survivor is going into it 51st season right now.

But while this stuff can be produced (be it text, TV, software), you can curate it. Those curated lists will become the new social treasure like how some movie critics could become minor celebrities in themselves. Yeah there will be AI bots trying to do that as well, but if they fall flat, so to will their respect.
