I like the concept. I have a e-ink reader where I removed the hull because it’s annoying, but at some point I must have damaged the display a bit and now it has a little black spot. With this the added bulk also doubles the area available for text. Maybe not that useful for novels that you read through linearly, but for non-fiction it would be nice to see other chapters, glossaries, etc. on one display while keeping the other at the page you were reading. Mainly a problem of software and enough buttons to be able to comfortably use that.

Though the low-res displays of this prototype look atrocious to me (pixelation and uneven blackness), maybe a later version will improve on that.

Well, the Glimpse project didn’t do the boring thing and just rebrand GIMP, they had more ideas and not enough people to work on them so they failed pretty quickly. If a simple rebrand would be used more than the original still remains to be proven, though it not existing might also be taken as indication that the demand for “GIMP with another name” isn’t there.

music player demon runs in the background and plays music (always remembers its position, and if you reboot while playing music it’ll continue playing automatically when the system is up again), and can be controlled by various clients like Cantata, Euphonica or Plattenalbum (they should all do 2.) and many others. It can output network streams, clients can connect over the network (control the music on your PC from your phone), utility demons to feed your play queue with similar or random songs…

Very versatile, though setup is a bit more complicated than with one simple program.

GNU parallel, to run commands on all cores, and for its filename pattern substitution.

For example: ls *.flac | parallel ffmpeg -i {} {.}.mp3 encodes a directory of FLAC files to MP3. parallel -a <(ls *.flac) -a <(ls *.mp3) --xapply copytags {1} {2} then copies each FLAC file’s metadata to the corresponding MP3 file (which ffmpeg already does, just to illustrate the --xapply option).

Have you made sure that your other rooms are not getting moldy? Cold air can’t carry as much moisture so your walls, furniture, etc. might be getting damper than they should be.

They should have focused on the name change, to prove that there is a demand for “GIMP but with another name”. Everything else can be done in the main project or any fork, and that those don’t exist show that the manpower needed for that isn’t really available.

There was a separate project that changed the name to “Glimpse”, and then got too many other great ideas for the few people they had to actually get somewhere and it dissolved.

Make sure to disable Windows hybrid sleep. If your system isn’t shutdown properly and you access the Windows partition from another system that can destroy data.

If you just want to keep the data on the Windows partition and usually don’t need to run Windows, I’d remove the Windows drive and keep it somewhere safe, and get another SSD for Linux. That way, the two systems are completely separate and can do nothing to each other.

Swap is mostly a crutch for too little RAM, if the system doesn’t have enough the best solution would be an upgrade. If that’s not possible, consider zram-swap, or if you have to, swap to an SSD (that will reduce its lifespan, though maybe not in a relevant manner). If you swap to an old HDD you won’t have much fun using the system.

Audiobooks have a simple workaround if you can find a version of the book in text format to download, just index that.

Calibre can create a full text index to search through everything (well, for files that actually contain the text, and it needs a lot of space).

In other words, lack of accountability leads to bad behaviour. He might be onto something there…

So what’s the open source alternative you found? Sounds like it needs more advertising.
