I’m not sure if you’re asking me personally as I didn’t publish the article so I can’t answer for Solarpunk Stories but I’m aware of how problematic Substack is and I certainly agree that an alternative platform that’s not centralized in corporate power that also works with Fascists would be more in line with Solarpunk ethics and praxis.

I think it was meant to be a very concise overview and update of their prior entry which elaborates a bit more. You can find that here . Those should definitely be included in a larger conversation but some might argue that those are solarpunk adjacent so maybe they wanted to keep it strictly to variations of solarpunk 🤷🏼♂️

As you should. The admins and moderators of this instance share in that sentiment. It would be a contradiction of this organization’s mission statements and policies aimed at protecting artists if that’s the case.

Their resources may be limited but that’s good they offer accommodation. I assume you’re referring to the residency. This is just an open call for artists to submit art.

Thanks. Solarpunk is deeply connected to Praxis as evidenced throughout this instance and readings that have been shared already. I’m trying to understand what specifically in this article could be useful for this community. As the first commenter pointed out, it’s a bit unclear from the piece itself

What part of this you think applies to Solarpunk and this community?

Thanks for catching that. It’s valid criticism and the article should attribute more sources. There are other articles about this program that are unfortunately behind a paywall and some just mention “pilot programs” but don’t specify much further. There is this company in The Netherlands which seems likely to be one of them. You’ll need to translate the site to your preferred language.
Good catch and important question. That would be good feedback if there’s a place to submit that. It’s unfortunate they default to hierarchical structures and more collective aspects would definitely be more solarpunk.

I hear you. That regional history must have been part of Butler’s inspiration or at least influenced it. I’m not as familiar with the geography of the area as I live in the Northeast so I appreciate your perspective. It seems as though many people saw this as inevitable and it’s a tragic wake up call for others who ignored history. Thanks for sharing the link.

Not just “a neighborhod” but several including predominently black neighborhoods as the article points out. This is far from a natural disaster and many are actively trying to claim it is. Indigenous peoples performed controlled burns that prevented this prior to colonization. The article is very brief but points this out. It’s an entire ecosystem impacted not just celebrities and Octavia Butler made some predictions that were frighteningly astute without trying to say that we are doomed to repeat this.
Great question! If you look in the sidebar of this very community and its larger instance you will find that our admins have placed helpful links to answer exactly that question. You can find the articles “What is Solarpunk?” and “A Solarpunk Manifesto” on our wiki
Cool! It would be nice to hear directly from them about their research and how this instance fits into it but at least we have the their results and this interview to give an overall perspective.
I’m aware and certainly agree they should find a more ethical host.
